Below are some of our experiences.

Sound - Laurent Garnier, The Cloud Making Machine.

Taste - Hummus and Corn Chips

Touch/Sight - Caddis Fly Cases (see pix below)

Scent - An eclectic aromatherapy oil with quite a variety of scents in combination to, hopefully produce a calming effect.

Spirit - A discussion about what if feels like when life doesn't follow your plans.

____________________________________________________________

Danielle was kind enough to treat us to many of our first views of caddis fly cases. From what I learned from Danielle (correct me if I get it wrong!) these flies live a portion of their lives under water. During that time, for protection's sake, they construct little cases much like little suits of armor, to keep them safe. When they morph into flies they leave behind these little shells for us to find.

Notice a few things. Once of the cases has a pumpkin seed stuck right to the back of it....this one was probably trying to save time. One is made almost entirely out of very small stones except for one (relatively speaking a boulder) which is incredibly large. One is made almost entirely out of small sticks running parallel to the case itself.

What an incredible world it is that God has created! It is amazing the things we see when we look.

_____________________________________________

For our spirit experience we discussed what our response is when our life doesn't go our way. Sometimes we simply can't plan in such a way that ensures success by our own definition. Sometimes we simply aren't in control. Sometimes life just happens to us regardless of how we've planned.

This results many times in confusion, pain, and reluctance to push forward. Truly, it is times like this when we feel like children and feel very alone.

Feel free to comment!

Last week's info (October 1st meeting) coming soon.

Dale

More Terror

This tragedy just happened. Both of them have been a bit different. Due to a scheduling snafu we met at Brewed Awakenings on Route 1 in Wakefield.

Much of our time we spent processing some of our thoughts about the tragedy in the South. Dealing with emotions that we felt upon news of it. We tried our best to put ourselves in the shoes of those who have suffered to try and see the physical, emotional, and spiritual impact it is having on their lives.

Please keep that situation in mind and in prayer. There is much devastation and many opportunities to help.

See you on September 18th at Kingston Free Library.

Dale

New Dates - Sept thru Oct

Just scheduled!!

We now have dates scheduled thru November of 2005. Our plate was certainly full!

The night began by viewing a video hosted by Morgan Spurlock (of "Super-Size Me" fame). In the video he addressed the problem of minimum wage. While we weren't seeking out political information we did learn plenty about how sometimes very hard working people simply don't generate enough resources to provide for their needs. It became easier to see how a downward spiral could begin and drag people to a place where even the most basic provisions become impossible to secure. Many of us were definitely challenged to see those around us, in our towns and cities, in a different and more sympathetic life. Like Morgan said "Now that I have placed myself in someone else's life I have changed." I think many of us felt that change as well.

I'd like to thank Brent Fooks for providing our taste experience for the night. He brought with him some Jamaican Ginger Beer. It was a very strong taste that left quite a burning sensation in the back of your throat. While many of us experienced it and chalked it up to just that, an experience, others (Linette :) ) enjoyed it and finished the rest of the bottle. Hope your throat is fine!

We then move to our sound, touch, and scent experience of the night. Many thanks to James Hauptman and Danielle Aube for providing the drums and expertise needed to pull off our drum circle.

At first my thought was that mayhem would ensue but surprisingly it sounded pretty good. James made the point that drumming is important to a vast number of cultures throughout the world and history. Sunday night we were a small part of that.

Here is a video of the attempt to gather eager drummers into a cohesive unit. You can hear me asking James if he was going to attempt to grab everyone's attention 8) In the end he was successful...Good job James! Drumming Video

Watch for new dates coming soon!!!

Dale

Origami

At Prodigy this past week we explored the art of Origami. I know I've been practicing.

Dale

July 24th Meeting

Last night at Prodigy we were graced with the visit of a special guest, Gabrielle Giliotti. Gabrielle (or GiGi) is a global messenger for the Special Olympics. She has competed herself in the Special Olympics for over 24 years and her training is ongoing.

Currently she is competing and training in the swimming competitions. In this summer's state games she won a 4th place ribbon, a 3rd place medal, and a 2nd place medal.

Our other experiences of the night were as follows-

Scent - Flowers, Day Lillies and Heliotrope

Sight - Soufiane Touzani, a soccer freestyler from the Netherlands.

Sound - Anonymous 4, an English chant and polyphony acapella group

Taste - Flowers, nasturtiums, bachelor's buttons, and several other edible flowers

Touch - Origami. We tried at least!

For sight we watched a video of a soccer freestylist named Soufiane Touzani....amazing skills!

For taste we braved the world of edible flowers. Yes, there is such a thing. The tastes ranged from mild to spicy (in the radishy sense).

For touch we attempted Origami with mixed results. From birds that only flapped one wing to faceless bats. It is definitely an art form that we attempted with no experienced coaches present. Thankfully we didn't have any serious paper cuts!

More on origami in a following post and how you can get started.

Dale

Reality Shifting

Last Sunday night, the 10th of July, our sight and spirit experience was wrapped up in the form of a video featuring David Blaine.

You may have heard of him. He is a very accomplished magician/illusionist. He specializes in "street magic". Up close and personal with illusions so convincing that it produces results like this.

Immediately prior to this reaction by this man David Blaine had performed a very convincing illusion. It was convincing enough that this man took it seriously. Seriously enough to take a moment to try to re-order his understandings of reality.

You see, David Blaine had just introduced an X-factor into this man's understanding of what was true and what wasn't. Now, based on that new evidence, he felt forced to try to re-evaluate all that he previously had held true or false.

But that is just parlor tricks. Very convincing and accomplished tricks but tricks just the same. We weren't interested in the tricks so much at Prodigy (though we were entertained).

We were interested in reality shifts. I believe we have a much greater power than simply illusion working for us. We have been promised the very power of God at our disposal as we do our best to follow him.

So here's the question we were faced with. Does our life impact others in the way David Blaine's magic does? If they are looking for reality shifts, different ways to understand the world they live in and even reality as a whole would they be more successful spending time with David Blaine or with us?

Our potential to produce the reaction pictured above is massive. Whether or not we take advantage of those opportunities is another question. But let's answer it with a "Yes!".

Multi-Cultural Events

At the last Prodigy get-together we talked for a little bit about multi-cultural events. One that I mentioned was taking place on the URI campus beginning this weekend July 17th. However, in researching this I found that the registration has passed so we will not be able to take advantage of this event.

Here is a link to the event if you are interested in learning more about it. It seems that it is more of a week long seminar/class type of an event rather than a collection of cultural experiences like we were thinking.

However, please keep your eyes open for other cultural events in our area.

The Newport Black Ships Festival was mentioned the other night. That is ongoing and ends on Sunday the 17th of July. So there is still time to attend that if you have the time.

If you happen to know the dates of the Portuguese festival in September (Labor Day weekend I believe)share with us!

We would love to know of any other events that are upcoming so we can further expand our horizons!

Dale

Suicide Bomber....

Top News Article | Reuters.com

Just came across this story on Reuters. Our night was a fun one. Below are the experiences we shared.

Sound - Latina Cafe Vol. 4 El Restaurante. This is a mix of some of the most popular latin artists out there. Possibly what you might hear as you sit in your favorite latin cafe.

Scent - Oranges spiked with cloves. For us bringing back memories of Christmas past. One question/thought path I've asked us to explore is what are other cultures' experiences of Christmas like. Maybe you will find this in your reading, TV viewing, or discussions with others. When we meet again on the 24th of July we will discuss it a bit.

Taste - Danielle brought some candies that she purchased at a local Mexican food shop. A mixture of sweet and spice which is rarely the taste combination that most Americans are used to.

Touch - This week we again experienced books in Braille. One selection was the well-known JRR Tolkien work, The Hobbit. The other was a child's book that substituted cut-outs for images like we would be used to.

Sight/Spirit - We experienced a video of David Blaine's Street Magic. While his magic wasn't our concentration there were some things that intrigued us with his communication abilities and his passion. I will post seperately about this seeing that it was the majority of our time together.

More coming....

Dale

Prodigy Vocab

Experiences create Touch Points which create Opportunities. Opportunities acted on create Prodigy Moments.

At Prodigy we believe that God’s love for the world resides in each one of His followers. His love in us drives us to experience the world we are in. Each time we meet we strive to have an experience for each of the six senses. The senses are scent, sight, sound, spirit, taste, and touch.

The experiences we share create touch points with the world around us. Possibly the type of music we listened to at Prodigy last week is the same type that is coming from the iPod of the person sitting next to you in the doctor’s waiting room. You have a touch point with that person you wouldn’t have had a week before. You are coming out of your box.

That touch point brings you to the doorway of an opportunity, a choice. Do you say something to that person? Do you mention that you’ve just been exposed to that type of music yourself? Opportunities are neither black nor white, right nor wrong, pure nor defiled. They are what you make them. What do you make them?

An opportunity taken advantage of brings about a Prodigy moment. A moment when what we do together, intentionally expanding our horizons and intentionally stepping out of our little box into this world (Raise Your Gaze), takes shape by gifting you with the beginnings of a relationship with someone God desperately cares for.

From there God does awesome things!

Prodigy Moment from Tanzania

I had said earlier that I was going to post some of the details of some of the incredible events that happened at Prodigy this past Sunday night. I've asked Dennae to fill the details in for me so that I get the details right. Thanks Dennae for the info!

Dennae has some friends in New Hampshire. She went up to visit them over this past weekend. During her stay she went to the coffee house that her friend's church ran. When she got there she was introduced to a man named Mordecai. Mordecai is from Tanzania. He explained that he was a pastor and that he had come to America for a reason. Pastor Mordecai had felt led by God to come to America in order to raise finances to enable some visions he has had for the work he is doing in his country. He has a vision to build a combination facility that would encompass a training center, an orphanage, and a church.

The church that Dennae was visiting had worked with Pastor Mordecai in his country for the past 4 years. And so, when he came to America he was more than welcome there. He had just arrived in town on Thursday, the night before Dennae met him. During the conversation with Dennae she had mentioned to Pastor Mordecai New Hope Chapel and that her uncle, Brent was involved in the missions works there. They invited him down and he was happy to come. Brent got a call on Sunday morning that Pastor Mordecai was in town to visit.

When Brent talked with him Prodigy came up because it was that evening. Pastor Mordecai joined Brent and Chris that evening.

Now would be a good time to read my previous post but in case you haven't let me thumbnail it for you. The sound experience that night was Habib Koite. As that was playing in the background for portions of the evening Pastor Mordecai actually recognized the instruments and the language being used. Obviously I had no idea there would be an African national there when I chose that for the sound experience.

Our sight/spirit experience was a National Geographic special on female suicide bombers (see post below for further description). Unbeknownst to me, Pastor Mordecai had been raised as a Muslim and had begun following God 4 years ago. Needless to say, when we opened the floor for questions after the very challenging video Pastor Mordecai had some incredible comments. Everyone there was honored to have such incredibly relevant commentary on the emotional impact we had just experienced.

In the conversation that evening my wife, Jen and Pastor Mordecai began talking. Jen connected him to her father's coffee house ministry in Ocean City, Maryland. As it turns out, Jen's dad is planning on visiting Tanzania in October. So Pastor Mordecai was immediately invited to Ocean City where he is now. While there he is connecting to with pastors and churches in the area and I have no doubt that the finances he is desiring for the ministry in Dar Salaam will be raised.

An amazing sequence of events, God-orchestrated. I am honored to have been at least a small part of what God is doing.

Take Two

Well, our second meeting is under our belt and what a night it was. It really ran the gamut of emotions for many of us. Here is a little run-down of the night's events and experiences.

Sound - Habib Koite
African Malian guitarist. World renowned. His music is very soothing and creative. The percussion accompaniment adds a texture that is like a tapestry and is definitely not Western.

Taste - fresh picked strawberries. Possibly a familiar taste for some but one that brings to mind summer months.

Scent - basil. A scent that you may associate with foods you've eaten. Remember scent is the sense that triggers memory the most of all the physical senses.

Touch - 2 books in Braille. Sometimes at Prodigy the things we allow to impact our senses don't leave us with a pleasant sensation at all and this was one of those. This video was a picture into a lifestyle and mindset that is far removed from most of ours. It was staggering to comprehend some children depicted and their frank conversation and acceptance of the death all around them.

Click HERE to read about it.

When it comes to experiences that are different from our norm this one ranked high. After it was over the room was covered in a hushed silence, a seeming reluctance to speak. It was difficult to even process the images that we'd seen in thought form and even harder to in speech.

Probably the most poignant image of the video for me was of a young child flying a kite atop a pile of blasted debris left behind by a suicide bomber. A place we would never think of letting our children near never mind play on top of. I was pushed out of my box.

We also had a special visitor. The story behind his attendance is incredible and divine in many ways. I will post the details in the coming days so you can all share in the amazing moment.

Dale

Explorers not Adventurers

Adrenaline. Defined as one of the chemical messengers in the body that causes the heart to beat faster. Basically, arenaline (or epinephrine if we want to get technical) is a rush. It is chemical excitement. It is just what our body needs to get us moving when we need to.

You've heard of "adrenaline junkies" or "thrill seekers". I've even heard them called "type X's", X standing for extreme.

Adrenaline is what causes you to shake like a leaf just after that near accident you were sure you couldn't avoid but did. It causes instant action when a child is in imminent danger by the pool, causing you to move faster than you thought possible. In many ways, it is a natural form of speed and some people chase after it like a drug.

At Prodigy on June 12th, we talked about the difference between adventurers and explorers. You see, they are similar in many ways. In the picture above it is very possible that the individual in free fall is an adventurer. Jumping for the thrill of it, for the rush, for the fix of adrenaline she gets. But that's why adventurers adventure. For the thrill alone. No other reason is necessary.

But she may also be an explorer. It is possible that the jump was necessary in order to discover what lay so far below and jumping was either the fastest or the only way to get there. And that is what defines the explorer. They will risk, dare, experience, and even endanger themselves for the sake of discovery but not for the thrill alone. Yes they will risk but risk with a purpose.

At Prodigy our desire is not to be adventurers. During our meetings we try to impact our senses with events we call experiences. And so on a given night we may have a sight experience or a sound experience or a taste experience. Now an adventurer would be happy with just the experiences but not an explorer. An explorer needs a purpose.

At Prodigy we are explorers because we have a purpose. We experience not just for the rush of something new but in hopes that it will broaden our ability to communicate with the world we live in. That, maybe, it will create a touchpoint with someone we couldn't relate to before.

We are explorers because we experience for the sake of discovering people.

Culture

Prodigy Dates

Here are the dates that Prodigy will be meeting over the summer. It seemed to be the perfect space. Several people commented on the room having the right "feel". It is a striking room with its cavernous sloped ceilings. The ceiling's curvature gives the room a very organic feel. Not like you are outside but nice just the same. And for being built as a courtroom originally it does have a great combination of architecture and lighting that gives it a very comfortable feel.

Alot of words about a room but I can't help but think that we've found a great spot!

Dale

Danielle Aube, Artist

We were honored this past Sunday to be able to sit with Danielle Aube. She was kind enough to discuss some of the pieces she brought with her on that evening but not only that. She gave us a peek into how an artistic/creative person thinks.

Personally, since I was young I have always been intrigued with people's artistic ability and love to watch it in action. I have always been fascinated with the creation process and think it may be the closest we get to exemplifying God's capacity to create.

One of the pieces that Danielle shared with us was a branch that she had sculpted from ceramics. As she told us the process it took to arrive at what you see there it was obvious that somewhere between inspiration and expression there was a lot of thoughtful work. I apologize for the poor detail of the photo. It really doesn't do justice to the intricate detail in the branch that fooled your eye time and time again as you looked at it.

Below are 2 separate representations of the same image. If I can paraphrase Danielle's comments she was striving to show that sometimes different views/perspectives of the same image can elicit different emotions in the hearts of the viewers. (correct me if I didn't get that quite right Danielle)

Again, thank you, Danielle. Communication with each other. In the pic below you see Michelle (standing), Anel (seated in chair), and JennyRose (w/ back to camera) discussing some of the experiences we had at Prodigy just this past Sunday night.

Since we are on the subject, let's talk abit about communication. We visited it briefly on Sunday but in case you weren't able to be there let me relay some of the questions we were pondering.

What is necessary for good/productive communication?

What is the most effective form of communication? For example, compare body language to internet chat.

Even if you were able to be @ Prodigy feel free to expand on some of these questions so we can all learn from your thoughts.

I am sure that all who read this have unique views about the topic and your views are valuable to us, after all that is the drive behind Prodigy.

Dale

Prodigy Tag by Dale III

For those of us who don't know a tag is a grafitti term. In common western understanding there are five senses through which we experience our world. Sight, hearing, taste, touch, and smell.

But I and others have come to believe in a sixth sense. A sense that recognizes and perceives information about our existence that doesn't come through the 5 senses we just mentioned. I call it spirit.

Our spirit is that sense that receives input from outside of ourselves. Responding and reacting and filtering this input many times completely independent of the traditional 5.

At Prodigy we explore experiences through all 6 senses on a regular basis. Not just concentrating on the 5 but including, also, the sixth sense. We will try to challenge ourselves to leave our box by experiencing the world God has given us using all the tools he has given us to experience with.

Should be fun!

Dale

Prodigy Poster

What will Prodigy look like?

To keep perspective it will be best to read this post before continuing with my explanation as I will refer to terms within it.

Prodigy is conceived with the idea that experience creates opportunity. But not as a direct connection. Here is how it works and I have seen this dynamic personally.

A variety of experience (or knowledge of cultural languages) creates touchpoints with people. When talking to a birdwatcher if you have some knowledge of birds then you will have a firmer foundation upon which to build a relationship. When talking to a South African, having any knowledge of South African culture under your belt will be some common point upon which to begin a relationship. The examples are myriad. The more of our world we experience or have some knowledge of the bigger our audience becomes, the greater our opportunity for relationships becomes.

Some examples. The other day I was talking with someone that was several yrs my senior. We were in a building that had some great old architecture. It was obvious that she was passionate about it. I had spent 14 years of my life in carpentry, many of them restoring buildings that were hundreds of years old. The conversation between us flowed naturally as we hit on that touch point.

At Prodigy we will intentionally expand out experiences so that we will also expand our potential to relate to others more freely. We will do this by striving to touch each of the senses when we get together. (More on the senses in a future post.) As we expand out experience our potential in our world expands as well.

Step out of the box.

Dale

The End of May

We are looking to begin meeting @ the end of May 2005. His intention was to become all things to all people, that by every possible means he may reach some. This was his intention and this is what he practiced, a constant effort to communicate life to the world he was in. He changed who he was so that doors of opportunity would be opened to relate to people who weren’t necessarily like him. He spoke their language. Not languages of words but languages of culture, experience, and understanding. By becoming the speaker of many of these cultural languages Paul became one of the greatest communicators the world has ever seen.
